Boron Revolution in Medical Textile

In medical textile materials whose importance and market share increase, boron will be used thanks to the Technologies developed by Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) Working Group on Stem Cell and the Faculty Member of Yeditepe University Prof. Dr. Fikrettin Sahin.

Sahin, emphasizing that the textile materials used at the hospitals should be produced and distributed to the ultimate user in a sterile way, stated however that there have been problems about the use of these medical textiles because of their being unhygienic. Sahin said: “We have for the first time developed a technology for both the production and also use of medical textiles, and created awareness in this context in the medical sector.”

“We Use Our National Wealth-Boron”

Stating that they can hygienize the medical textiles before or after the production with several Technologies, Sahin:“Our national wealth boron is being used in the technology we have developed. The production is carried out with a formulation integrated into the raw materials. This technology is preferred in long-lasting and multithreading productions. Single use products are dried and packed after a special solution is applied. We spent about 15 million Turkish liras on RE&DE works carried out to hygienize medical textile products, and we keep working on product development. Further, we have several patents related to such kind of products, some of which have already been obtained and some of which have not yet been approved.”

“No Equivalence”

Sahin stated that the hygienic medical textiles containing boron minerals have been introduced in international health fairs in Turkey, USA, Poland, Germany, Dubai and Japan, and these products will be launched to national and international markets in 2015. Sahin, highlighting that there is no equivalence for these products, said that the prices will not be that higher than the traditional products.

Pointing that the use of hygienic peds, underpeds and wet towels produced for kids, patients and women is on increase, Sahin:“These above mentioned products may cause urinary tract illnesses and genital diseases when they are not sterile or antibacterial. Today, in the current medical textiles and hygienic products there is no such antibacterial or antiviral feature. The use of medical textiles and hygienic products developed with our technology will contribute a lot in reducing the infectious diseases encountered in the medical sector.”
