Workers' protests in Bangladesh, which has a say in the world's ready-made clothing supply, orders have changed their route and moved to Turkey.

Worker Protests in Bangladesh Shifted Orders to Turkey

As Bangladesh textile industry has been affected negatively by the pandemic since payments have been in delay, protests and riots have been in and across nation; another major crisis have occurred with the cancellation of orders from the USA and the EU.

As a consequence of extended delays in payments of workers active in the ready-made clothing industry in Ahulia, Bangladesh, demonstrations were taking place around the city and to control the situation, police forces used their power by using tear gas and water cannon. During protests, physical injuries and a casualty were recorded. The fundamental reason behind the protests was the closure of Hong Kong-based Lenny Fashions and cancellation of payment workers as these happened in an environment in which major factories have been closing their mills and causing tension amongst workers.

New Trade Route Picked Up as Turkey

EU member countries, which had difficulty in placing orders to Bangladesh, where uncertainty has been prevailing, turned their route to Turkey to place their new orders. With the years of expertise and know-how of Turkish ready-made clothing industry that up until now has been critical in delivering orders in time; both employment and exports experienced growth.
