Devoted attempts of Ertuğrul Tanrıverdi, member of the governing board of Kahramanmaraş Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KMTSO), were concluded with the signature of a protocol between KMTSO and Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University (SKÜ). With the protocol, the students enrolled in the department of Textile Engineering this year were entitled to receive non-refundable grants. KMTSO will provide 10 students enrolled in the department with non-refundable grants. Within the scope of the grant, 300 Turkish Liras will be paid to the students each month for 8 months and the continuity of the grant will depend on the success of the student. The students fulfilling the success criteria will receive the grant for 5 years.
The support provided by KMTSO for the Department of Textile Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of KSÜ under the motto of “Textile Education in the Centre of Textile” is the first of its kind. The support of KMTSO is not limited to this. The students who will rank in the top three in the English preparation class which is compulsory for the department of textile engineering will be sent to England or Malta and all the expenses will be covered by KMTSO.
Applied Engineering Education
The students of the Department of Textile Engineering of KSÜ will reach the opportunity of taking education in the workplace via applied engineering education and the demand of the textile industry for more qualified engineers will hereby have been met. The Intern Engineering Education in Textile (TIME) will be launched in the 2014-2015 Academic Year. The program will be jointly conducted by the department and KMTSO. KMTSO aims at helping the students of TIME Program find firms and following their trainings in addition to facilitating the recruitment of qualified staff by the firms and employment of the graduates.
Making explanations about the issue, Karaküçük, the President of KMTSO, stated that they have established really significant and favourable relations with Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University within the scope of university-industry cooperation in the last 3 years. Stating that textile sector is important in Kahramanmaraş and 85 % of the export volume of the city is constituted by the textile sector, Karaküçük said that: “90 % of the employment opportunities are provided by the textile sector. The students preferring the Department of Textile in Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University will receive a monthly grant of 300 Turkish Liras from Kahramanmaraş Chamber of Commerce and Industry for 5 years. Our support for the university and the department will continue every year when needed.”
Karaaslan: ‘’ We are pleased with the point we arrived at”
Fatih Karaaslan, the Rector of KSÜ, said in the speech he delivered following the protocol signature ceremony that: “We have worked in cooperation with KMTSO since the beginning. We are pleased with the current position we reached as a result of this cooperation. Low number of the students preferring the department of textile engineering in our university will lead to some problems. It is highly pleasing to see that the number of students is increasing with the influence of the grant of KMTSO.”

Prof. Dr. Onur Balcı, Deputy Head of the Department of Textile Engineering.
