There is a fine line between being successful and being unsuccessful in fashion designs which can change according to time, place and opportunities. One of the important figures who walk on this line successfully and direct the Turkish fashion, Nil Uzun started her successful career by working as fashion editor. Providing consultancy to important brands in Turkey, Uzun works as image maker for fashion and cover shots of numerous different fashion magazines as well as press and album cover photographs of artists, conducts styling works for season catalogues and parade shows of textile companies and also makes new projects by keeping her modestness with her two boutiques named “niluzunstyle”.
“Styling has not been well-comprehended in Turkey yet”Expressing that she serves in the most diversified range among her colleagues in terms of styling, Nil Uzun explained her works in terms of fashion styling as such: “I do interior styling for hotels, events and special nights, wardrobe, food and interior architecture. I actually try to prove that the profession of styling is not limited to fashion. What I do indicates that a food, a house or invitation can be stylised. In this respect, I blaze trails and also combine my profession with other sectors. Considering that “styling” has not been well-comprehended in Turkey even in the textile sector and its important has not been understood yet, the difficulty of my struggle can be appreciated.”
Emphasizing that she is open to criticism in her projects, Uzun states that “discussions should be held over errors or deficiencies or what can be done in the subsequent projects when one fails in a project instead of giving away to despair. In this way, one can realise errors and deficiencies and get one step closer to success in the upcoming projects. All these provide you with experience. These experiences add value to the nature. With this viewpoint, I have taken part and I am taking part in numerous projects.”From Fashion to Decoration and Architecture
Showing a study conducted in Elele magazine in 2000 as the starting point of her styling works, Uzun has published her fashion shots in almost all magazines. Making shots for such magazines as Halen Hello and Elle Decor, Uzun shoots catalogues and advertisement campaigns for hundreds of textile brands including Batik, Aker, Pierre Cardin, Polo Garage, Collins, Defacto, Euromoda, Damat Tween, Avva, US Polo and Balizza. Design talent of Uzun is not only limited to fashion and she makes decorations for many hotels, New Year and birthday parties and circumcision feasts etc. She has made numerous designs in the field of architecture."“I get inspired from tropical plants”
Having two boutiques where her own designs are sold under the brand of Niluzunstyle, Uzun explains her other projects as such: “I have a parade show project for which I conduct the preparations with Uğurkan Erez and in which I will try to emphasize my fashion designs much more. Besides, I prepare a winter collection for my boutique. I also work as the art director of an internet site. I currently carry out the preparations for album covers of several artists preparing their new albums. Uzun stated that she gets inspired by the life itself in all these projects and added that: “I get inspired by the life itself, everything it contains but actually there are some elements I cannot resist. Magazines and fashion shots are the elements that I follow continuously in order to take inspiration. An unexpected image seen anywhere may open new horizons before me. Movies that open new horizons for our imagination, imaginary world triggered while reading, travelling, and seeing different cultures and of course botany and tropical plants, in particular, inspire me.”
Purple will mark the upcoming seasonFeaturing her innovative style in her boutique, Uzun states that a more feminine woman is ahead of us in the fashion of this year and we will encounter with women wearing riding skirts and stilettos more frequently. Stating that gold, silver metallic reflections, colourful patterns, leather, camouflage and military fashion which revives every two seasons and pied de poule patterns are favourite, Uzun stated that floral patterns, pompons, eyelets and guipure will mark the upcoming summer season. Expressing that purple will be the favourite colour of the upcoming summer; Uzun added that ethnical African patterns, black-white, bell-bottomed trousers and chiffon shirts will become prominent in the season.”
“We started to create our own fashion”
Stating that the Turkish fashion sector started to reveal itself in the last years with the new generation fashion designers who have had the chance of introducing themselves through fashion weeks organised consecutively, Uzun emphasized that Turkey started to create its own fashion although slowly. Expressing that many talented figures had the opportunity of entering in the market thanks to the design competitions organised, Uzun added that: “Turkey is not a manufacturing country anymore and it now creates its own fashion. According to me, the only problem is related to the marketing of this fashion. If we become successful in this area, Turkey will mark the world fashion.” Besides, in relation to the opinions arguing that fashion has recently become more conservative, she stated that “I do not agree with the opinion that politics has reflected on the fashion in terms of conservatism”, Uzun added that “Of course, brands appealing to the conservative part of the community increased in number and there are many alternatives. However, these impacts are only seen in the retail sector. The biggest mistake, in this regard, is that anything sold in the market is considered as fashion. Fashion is a way of dressing rather than requirements and our fashion has really strong representatives and a highly modern standing.”
