7th Istanbul Fashion Conference organized by Turkish Clothing Manufacturers' Association (TCMA) which brought the world leaders together, fashion historian Colin McDowell, spoke about fashion and slow fashion the future of fashion to our publishing group. Colin McDowell indicating that the fashion industry from poor working conditions to excessive consumption is the cause of the problem, claimed that the solution is to return to a lifestyle where simplicity and richness in the inner world is emphasized.
McDowell statin that he has been in the fashion industry for many years, "Toxic effects of fashion is clearly visible in India, China, Brazil and Africa where textile industry is concentrated in. One of the main responsible of the polluting pesticide is fashion, because they are used to produce cheap cotton. Fashion is another reason for the water scarcity as well. Only to produce 1 pair of jeans, 800 liters of water consumption is made in order upbringing the necessary cotton. Fashion which focuses on low cost-high price, triggers poor working conditions and child labor in countries such as China" said.
Solution is Slow Fashion
According to McDowell, creating comfort and a distinctive style remains in the background and when ever-changing trends increases, fashion no longer becomes a form of self-expression but it creates judgement on yourself and others. McDowell who sees fast fashion as the responsible, also stated that slow fashion must come against this mass consumption frenzy and the culture of greed.
McDowell who says "Fashion should come in simplicity rather than extremism", stated that qualified and classic fashion products which never goes out of fashion should be assimilated. Thus, it is possible returning to a lifestyle where from the outside simplicity and from the inner world richness is emphasized, McDowell also stated that extremism seen in women's fashion has also jumped to men's fashion.
