Achieving growth with the exports to the European Region, Turkish textile and apparel sector was not able to maintain the level acquired in 2012 and it displayed a lower performance.

Export Lost Power in 2012

In the January-December period of 2011, compared to the previous year, Turkey's textile exports increased by 21.9 percent and reached USD 8 billion. This figure is over 18.2 per cent, Turkey’s general export rate. Russian Federation, Italy, Germany, Great Britain, Iran, Poland, Romania, the United States, Bulgaria and Spain are among the countries coming to the fore as the counties to which Turkey exported textiles and raw materials the most. Middle Eastern countries in particular, Russia and the Turkic Republics, North Africa and the United States are the new alternative markets of the sector.

Considering export on the basis of export figures, 2010 and 2011 figures show an increase. While woven fabrics constitute the most high-volume export with USD 2.6 billion, annual exchange rate became 16.5 per cent. On the other hand, performing USD 201 million of export, the nonwovens industry reached a value of USD 300 million with an increase of 49.3 percent in 2011.

Exports Showed a Falling Tendency in 2012

In the first half of 2012, textile exports decreased by 4.1 per cent compared to the first half of 2011 and valued USD 3.9 billion. Thus, textile exports rate within Turkey’s USD 65.6 billion of general exports dropped from 6.2 percent to 5.4 percent. From a monthly basis, sector grew by 1.7 percent in February. Apart from that, textile exports declined by 2.9 percent in January, 0.8 percent in March, 14.2 percent in April, 1.5 percent in May, and 5.3 per cent in June. On the basis of product groups, while export performance in fiber, yarn and woven fabric products fell, exports increased in knitted fabrics and non-woven products.
