In the 8th International EKOTEKS Textile Symposium of Textile and Ecologic Test Research Development Center (EKOTEKS) with the topic of ‘’ Consciousness- Raising and Preventative Measures at Production’’, Ministry of Customs and Trade explained the survey results about health risk insecure products.
The President of the General Secretariat of Istanbul Textile and Apparels Exporters’ Association (IHKIB), Hikmet Tanrıverdi stated that carcinogenic included products threated human health seriously and also said ‘’ According to last 5 years audit reports of Ministry of Customs and Trade , 71 thousands 316 products were impounded and 3 million TL penalty fine was given to the firms’’. Tanrıverdi told that ready wear and textile products were not comfy but they didn’t have danger for human health as well once in his statement. Tanrıverdi who said that now synthetic products took the place of natural products and that meant carcinogenic and many harmful substances contact with human body.
The Usage of Chemical Products has increased
By stating that some manufacturing firms in the world increase this risk for consumers due to their over- profit passion, Tanrıverdi said that the usage of harmful chemicals like azo colorants which replaced with madder above the permitted level threated all human health especially children.
Tanrıverdi who indicated that home production was taken under control to great extent, said ‘’ Threat is especially major at imported products. In 2011, at the inspection carried out in Istanbul, clothes which included 300 fold azo colorant above the level value was run across. There isn’t specific data to speak certain. But we cannot deny the share of chemicals used at textile and ready wear increase the cancer cases as they increase the allergically illnesses.
It is impossible to understand whether the product used by the customer includes harmful substances or not with their own means. According to last 5 years audit reports of the Ministry of Customs and Trade, 71 thousands 316 products was impounded including baby product, shoe, toys, stationary and ready wear and 3 million TL penalty fine was given to the firms’’.
“Quality came into prominence”
Stating that billion dollars of market worldwide at ready wear and textile is on the nail, Tanrıverdi focused on those firms put up a fight within the market. Tanrıverdi said ‘’ Once price/ cost was determinative in the competition. In recent years, quality has shone out’’. Tanrıverdi said they understood whether the product was harmful to human or environment or comfy from the quality. By expressing that manufacturing of harmless to ecologic balance and human products is available, Tanrıverdi also stated that giving up with artificial or synthetic products in the sector which hundred millions of piece production is made is impossible. Tanrıverdi who stated that nano technologic products with the features of non- retentive, non- iron or thermal based were the indispensable parts of daily life and he kept on his words:
“We have to give importance to R&D”
“As we cannot give up comfort, we need to search for the ways how we can make technologic products suitable for human health. At this point, the importance of R&D and innovation shows up. Of course taking the repayment of the budget which was separated for R&D and innovation to tomorrow is impossible. We need to look at the case long- termed. If we want to be a big player in world markets, we have to reserve more sources for R&D and innovation. Besides existence challenge in international competitive market, we need to think this as a matter of public health protection responsibility’’.
