Uludag Textile Exporters' Association (UTIB) organized seminars entitled 'Sustainable Production in Textile Finishing Sector' within the scope of 'To form sample models for Clean Production in Textile Finishing Sector' project. With the support of KOSGEB (Small & Medium Enterprises Development Organization), the event was organized in two sessions in Uludag Exporters' Association service building. Bursa Technical University Rector Assistant Prof. Dr. Sule Altun and Uludag University Associate Prof. Dr. Mehmet Kanık and Environment and Urban Development Ministry Specialist Zerrin Leblebici were among the project consultants of the seminars. The specialists informed about the obligations Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Communique, published in December 2011 by the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning, imposed on the sector.
Speakers making important statements about the advantages and disadvantages of the obligations, made presentations about how to turn sample models of Best Available Techniques (BAT) and the communique into an opportunity in Green Market. At the opening speech of the seminar, Sengul Teke, MSc Textile Engineer from Bursa Textile and Apparel R & D Center (BUTEKOM) gave detailed information about the project 'Sample Models Existing for Clean Production at Textile Finishing Sector'.
Prof. Dr. Şule Altun giving information about the opportunities offered by the green market, environmental impact awareness in the world market, and green market orientation, also shared with the participants the topics world green market size, environmental impact of textile products and 'Life Cycle Assessment' used in the environmental impact assessment. Altun, stating green market size was 3.2 trillion pounds and increased by 4% each year according to recent research, pointed out that today 40% of American consumers, and 50% of European consumers have a high opinion of green products.
In the seminar, the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning Specialist Zerrin Leblebici gave important information about the application of the communique legislation. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Kanık is one of the names making a statement on the subject. Describing the communique as a very good opportunity for the companies, he made explanations about how BATs can be applied more efficiently with the current developments in green manufacturing technology besides the general applications in the facility. He finished his speech by expressing that apart from the negative environmental impacts of applied BATs, the production efficiency was increased by gaining from energy and raw materials.
