4th Nalbant Period in TEMSAD

8th Ordinary General Assembly of TEMSAD (Textile Machine and Accessories Industrialists’ Association) was held in Yenibosna Gönen Hotel. Adil Nalbant was re-elected as the chairman of the association once more in the general assembly meeting held in 19 January. In the biennial TEMSAD elections, Adil Nalbant was awarded the chairmanship for the fourth time. While only one figure changed in the board of executives, it drew attention that the cadre of 2011 elections was preserved. While Hakan Gürel from Entema, Mehmet Ağrikli from Ağteks, Numan Gürel from GES Elektronik and Cüneyt Alkan from Alkan Makine continued to serve as vice-chairmen, Uğur Çetinkaya from Argetek became the Executive Secretary. Seven Yılmaztürk from Proser who was included in the cadre with 2011 elections was replaced by Hüseyin Birden from Beneks Makine. This was the only change. The other members are Ayhan Ballı from Uniteks, Ali Çakıcı from Canlar Makina, Metin Daloğlu from Tekst Makine and Levent Bayraktaroğlu from Tüm Kalıp.

Making important evaluations about the sectoral development in the board meeting, Adil Nalbant expressed that he believes that TEMSAD will grow much more with a motivation based on unity and integrity in its 15th year. Emphasizing that they increased the export figure from 25-30 million dollars in 1998 to the figures of the present day, Nalbant stressed that they reached a total amount of 300 million dollars with a stable growth. Stating that a careful work should be done to increase export volumes, Nalbant expressed that: “Turkish manufacturers should go beyond productions made for finishing and dyehouses provided that they want to increase export volumes.Technological investments should be made. Profits obtained from the textile sector should also be directed to this sector. No textile manufacturer established production plants for a long time. Government subsidies are limited in this respect. Thus, textile machines export is stagnant. Without doubt, measures should be taken and all the firms should be supported especially in terms of R & D.”.

Second-Hand Machines Constitute a Big Problem

Emphasizing that Turkish textile machine and equipments sector continues its growth, Nalbant stressed on the reality of imported machines in the sector. Stating that China, India, USA, Germany and Turkey constitute about 48 % of the total export volume of textile machines and equipments, Nalbant said that “China constitutes almost 25 % of the market alone. Turkey has a share of 5,2 % in the market.”.

Emphasizing that Turkish textile machines and equipments sector is strong despite its deficiencies, Adil Nalbant reported that the sector clearly experiences important fluctutations. Repeating that export volume decreased from 2,2 billion dollars to 450 million dollars in 2009, Nalbant stated that this period could not be benefited and argued that Turkey turned into the “most favorite Textile machine scrapyard of the world”. He continued by saying: “A great majority of the machines imported since 2009 is second-hand machines. Unfortunately, the current customs legislation can not even identify the problem. We do not know certainly how many second hand machines there are in our country.”.

Export figures should increase rapidly

Making important evaluations in his speech, Adil Nalbant emphasized that export limit of 300 million dollars could not be exceeded. Urgent measures are necessary in this respect. Otherwise, Turkey will lose one of its components. Nalbant added that if sector expands under protection, export target of 2013 will be reached. Arguing that the a similar practice to the additional customs tax levied by the government on imported textile products to protect domestic textile sector from unfair competition is also essential for machines and equipments sector, Nalbant expressed that protected manufacturers could grow themselves.
